Interview: Laberge

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. For today's epic interview - we have an absolutely legendary person stepping up to the virtual hot seat here on the blog - Canadian nu disco / house producer (and bloghouse legend!) - Laberge. Known for his seminal work on labels such as Solid Bump Records and buttery smooth (this pun wasn't intended) independent productions across almost two decades - it is an absolute honor to have him here today. Without further ado, I'll let him do the talking! For those who don’t know you – who are you, and what music do you make? I am Laberge, from Vancouver, Canada. I have been producing disco house since 2007. You’ve been making music since 2005 – and rose to prominence during the bloghouse era – can you name some of your favourite artists from that period?  Well, my 2005 music was basically Daft Punk mashups or rave rap (electro house 140bpm with rap acapellas). Yeah that time was… something. Building onto that, what would you say i...

The Daft Punk Experience in Fortnite is awesome.

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque! Last night, after much anticipation - The Daft Punk Experience launched on Fortnite - and in my humble opinion, it is awesome. For those that have been living under a rock - it was announced a few weeks ago that Daft Punk would have their own in-game skins and cosmetics, and that there would be a game mode dedicated entirely to their work. So, last night - me and a bunch of others from French house collective Creux La Nuit (in particular - Guv'nor Funk, Opierm, Luv4Loop and DJ Supernick - Sboulouf Le Detective came in for the minigames!) joined forces and explored the event together. What followed was a night of practical chaos, but a lot of fun - here's what went down at this killer event! The Daft Punk Experience opened with players being taken through a portal directly up into space - while Contact - the final song from Daft Punk's legendary final album Random Access Memories played. Then, players flew directly through an...

Review: Original Tracks by The Phantom's Revenge

Released independently in 2010, Original Tracks - the first album from French house master and superhero The Phantom's Revenge is seen by many as a classic album from the bloghouse era - it's a seminal album packed with sixteen cracking singles, most of which were either released for free through MySpace - or through music blogs in the late 2000s. At heart, Original Tracks is a French house album stuffed with fantastic production, thumping beats, extremely heavy club weapons, expert sampling techniques, a crap ton of side chaining (come on, it was the bloghouse days though!) - brilliant (and at times humorous) ideas and just the right amount of quirkiness to make this iconic record one to remember. Original Tracks is one of my favourite French house albums, not just because it's effortlessly catchy, epic, and genuinely awesome - but also because it is an incredibly varied body of work. Every track on this album feels extremely unique and fun, and for good reason - The alb...

Creux La Nuit's 2nd anniversary party was epic.

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque! Today's post is a very special one - as today, I plan to cover everything about Creux La Nuit's second birthday party - which, if you weren't there - it was absolutely awesome all of the way through. Twelve DJs stepped up to provide absolutely killer sets in various different styles and moods - with fantastic visual work from Opierm to boot. Without further ado, let's get started! In case you've been living under a rock for the past six months - Creux La Nuit is the French house collective founded by Opierm in September 2023. If you've been a keen reader of this blog, you'll know that over the last few months the collective's releases and artists have been fixtures of the blog - with the collective's work being recognized by many - such as Melonade, Todd Edwards, Mike Sandcastle and various others.  This weekend (September 13th-14th!) on Twitch, a selection of the collective's artists performed vari...
