Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque!
It is absolutely brilliant - and it manages to capture the essence of the original perfectly, while giving it some extra kick just in time for it's 25th. As always - the bassline is still unbelievably killer, it's still one of the best examples of French filtery goodness (and a prime example of why French touch will NEVER DIE!) - and to add, there's also some excellent synths throughout, thick, epic pads during the build-up and some arpeggiated bells in the back for good measure. Fred Falke is a legend, case closed!
February is now upon us - and over the last two weeks, as always - there's been some absolutely monumental releases that have come out from a bunch of awesome people (most of which you'll know if you've read the blog before!) - so without further ado, let me bring you some of the best new stuff of late January (and maybe one thing from today, because I feel like it...)
Guv'nor Funk - All In
It's been a monumental weekend for underground collective Creux La Nuit - and on Friday, the legendary Canadian DJ and producer Guv'nor Funk dropped his (incredible) sophomore album through the collective. A true future classic - this LP showcases fourteen tracks of excellently produced filter house (with a few stranger cuts to boot) - it's a record that's built for clubs, home listening and general grooving all at once - which really is a massive plus. There aren't many house albums out right now that manage to sound so versatile and interesting.
There's all kinds of influences and moods that are explored or called upon on All In - the opening tracks begin in the same way that Daft Punk's legendary film Interstella 5555 does - and they ooze with funk, joy and late 90s influence. As the album progresses - Guv'nor takes the listener through barrels of heavy, DJ friendly bangers, such as Refraction and Paradise, before switching to gorgeous chillout excursions filled with fantastic production, softer undertones and fantastic synthesis.
There's also a few bits (and names) here that eager fans will recognize - the legendary Get To Know You, which was released through Creux La Nuit's third major compilation - the exhilarating, rock influenced classic Searching For You, and also excellent collaborations with DJ Double Dutch, Opierm and Sboulouf Le Detective - all of which, may I add, are slamming house ditties.
To sum it up - this album is incredible, and if this is anything to go by - French house is in for a very, very bright year - and so is Guv'nor Funk.
You can find All In on all major streaming platforms - however, I'd highly consider purchasing the album through Bandcamp!
Luv4Loop - What Has Gotten Into You?
Released today also on Creux La Nuit - the brand new mini-album from Liverpool based DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Luv4Loop is a stunning record which, although very different - is absolutely brilliant. On this record, Lee steps away from his fast-paced, happy go lucky garage roots and switches to creating an excellent mix between chill-wave, downtempo, nu disco and electronica. The result, is an extremely accomplished and deeply mature mini-album which feels very unique and at times, otherworldly.
One of the things I love about this release, is how genuinely well it is produced - What Has Gotten Into You oozes with warm, almost dream-like quality - there's gorgeous instrumentation which is used throughout, ranging from warm synthesizers, to luscious pads - the whole thing is ridiculously punchy (side-chain is the best thing ever...) - reminding me heavily of Onra, or Cape Coral - and there's also some seriously impressive sampling involved - ranging from movies, to house classics and general music references, buried deep inside this maze of a mini-album.
My favourites from this record include the excellent opener There // There - a hip hop influenced jam, with some nu disco influence sprinkled over - Bored of Waiting, which features additional production from fellow Creux La Nuit co-owner Inky - which feels like a steady mix between the work of Vanguard, the later work of LBCK, blog-era electro house and chillout (yes, I know that sounds a bit nuts) - and the album's closer, A Moment In Time - a deeply sentimental, yet summery nu disco jam soaked in reverb and low fidelity goodness, with some incredible instrumentation, including some killer guitar work.
In short - go and buy this album right now. It is stunning.
You can find What Has Gotten Into You? on all major streaming platforms - however to support Lee directly, buy it from his Bandcamp, linked below.
Diskovertz - French Revolution III
Also released on Creux La Nuit - yesterday, LA based producer Diskovertz came in hot with his brand new single - and man, it is fantastic. It's truly French house at it's finest, and it has everything one could want - it has some obvious post-disco influence, the sample selection is fantastic, it's ridiculously funky - and it reminds me heavily of the very early work of Go Go Bizkitt - which is a huge plus from me. It sounds best when played loud on some good speakers - or during a DJ set, which makes it a perfect track to light up parties and get people on the dance floor!
You can find it on YouTube and SoundCloud.
Gliczide - Da Midnight Beatz EP
Released on January 30th through his new label Flowerside - the brand new EP from Russia's finest filter house talent Gliczide is, as always, absolutely brilliant. On this release, you'll find four disco infused club-weapons influenced by the early sound of Fab G's legendary label Blackjack - in particular, the work of DJ Nekbath - and every single track does an excellent job of nailing the early 2000s sound of French house - but of course, with that sweet, modern twist.
Every single track on this EP is absolutely fantastic - all of the tracks are utterly infectious, incredibly bright and extremely hypnotic - likely thanks to the warm, slightly saturated production, hard hitting beats and dopamine inducing melodies and sample techniques that are shown with ease here. To add, there's definitely a slightly nostalgic charm to these tracks - with the second half sounding as if it's come off of a fresh cassette. I can definitely imagine these being rinsed by legendary DJs in 1999-2000 - and if that isn't enough to charm you into buying this EP - I'm not sure what else will (well, I can't stop listening to Da Midnight Put You Down, because damn it is FUNKY.)
Go and bag this EP now - and be sure to look out for more from Gliczide and his new label Flowerside. If it's anything to go by, the next few months are looking stellar for the guy.
Alan Braxe and Fred Falke - Intro (25th Anniversary Edition)
Building onto the topic of early 2000s French house - on January 21st - it was announced that there's going to be a 25th anniversary re-issue of Alan Braxe and Fred Falke's seminal filter house classic Intro - which was initially released on Vulture back in 2000.
You can pre-order the vinyl from Domino Records now - however, I'd mostly like to shine a light on the incredible new remix done by Fred Falke, which released on the same day of the announcement.
(I also did not mean to turn this part of the post into a full-blown production analysis, but oh well. Never get a music producer to write a blog...)
Intro (25th Anniversary) is now available to pre-order through Bandcamp digitally. The original track comes as a bonus!
Minuit Cafe and Rhodes Rodosu - Talk To You
Let's step away from French house for a minute, and take a look at the future funk scene at the moment. Released independently on January 30th - Talk To You, the brand new single from Minuit Cafe and Rhodes Rodosu is a stunning piece of work - that manages to bridge the sounds of future funk, nu disco and K-pop excellently. This track is ridiculously smooth - and it's one of the cleanest, if not the cleanest release I've heard this month - but that might be the bassline, or the airy, yet thick chords that dominate throughout, talking.
Flipping a K-pop jam by Tiffany Young expertly - Talk To You feels like a welcome mix between the styles of Night Tempo, the later work of Louis La Roche (especially his new single with Mike Mago) and the summery vibes of Sam Gellaitry. As a huge fan of all of these artists / musicians - this truly is a standout single, and if you're looking for something a little flamboyant to help you gear up for going out, or just to dance in your bedroom to - this might be a good pick!
You can find Talk To You on Bandcamp now.
QB9 - DO YOU TRUST ME
A few days ago, if you talked to any future funk fan and noticed they were particularly happy - this might have been why - the brand new single from Australian producer QB9 is absolutely fantastic, and a true return to form for one of the scene's most respected (and loved) producers. It's no surprise to see that everybody (including me) absolutely adores this track - although it's fairly minimal in terms of production - it's incredibly energetic, jovial, trendy and above all - it's really, really funky. Furthermore, it reminds me hugely of the 2020-2021 work of The Phantom's Revenge - a lot of which was released through Montaime - so if you're a fan of future funk or French house - you might want to give this a spin. One of the legends is back. Don't miss it!
You can find this track on SoundCloud now.
Funkaholique - Serious Night
I was thinking the other day, that we hadn't heard from ATD's resident Brazilian duo Fankaholique (formerly Funkaholic) in a while - so it was a nice surprise to find this killer new track from them on SoundCloud - which was released on January 24th.
As always - this new single oozes with the same Crydamoure-esque quality that they always bring to the table - it's incredibly heavy, warm, extremely bad-ass and a little bit dark - but above all, it's super, super groovy, deep, and also extremely quirky too - making it a perfect track to throw into your playlists to get through the last of winter. With the pounding drum work, heavy compression and idiosyncratic, slightly experimental vibes it gives off - this feels like a welcome mix between the work of Cryda Luv, Tui and and Cheers - so if you like your house with a little bit of 90s flavor - be prepared to have your ears blessed!
You can find this track on SoundCloud.
There you have it, everyone!
I hope you've enjoyed reading today's post - be sure to support all of the artists featured, and as always - keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.
