Review: Discovery by Daft Punk

Released in March 2001 - Daft Punk's sophomore album is nothing short of incredible - and to me, it is not just my favourite French house record of all time - it's my favourite record ever (period) for so, so many reasons. Across the album's fourteen tracks, the French duo go through multiple genres and influences - in the process creating an extremely memorable masterpiece that weaves between mainstream pop, filter house, plunderphonics (looking at you, Face to Face!) and even some slow jams and fun synth based experiments, while capturing the innocence and playful fun of childhood - and creating an album that continues to influence producers and musicians twenty four years after release. I think most people that know Discovery are aware of hits such as One More Time, Harder Better Faster Stronger and Something About Us - these three tracks are brilliant in their own ways - even though they are played almost too often (but for good reason!)  One More Time is a joyous, ce...

Let's bring blog house back.

Hello everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. This is a very special post for the blog, and you'll find out why as you read on. When I started at the discotheque, my main mission was to bring back a small portion of the blogging scene of the 2000s, while mixing it with a couple of musical scenes that I absolutely love. What I soon learnt, through numerous hours trawling through archives, Soulseek and old articles - was that between 2006-2012, there was a pivotal movement for house music - blog house. For those that don't know what blog house is - "blog house" refers to a movement most popular in the late 2000s and early 2010s, where places such as MySpace ruled the internet, and using tools such as WordPress and Blogspot - people would create their own custom blogs and post about the music and things they liked. Along with the boom of blogging during this time period - the birth of fidget house, the French electro revolution (looking at you, Ed Banger...) and the ...

Mid June drops!

Hello everyone - welcome back at the discotheque.  Summer is now well and truly upon us, and to celebrate - I thought I would do a post all about some the new tunes and releases that have serenaded us in the first two weeks of June. Without further ado - let's talk about some bangers! KNMN - God Damn!!! (Miss Phantom Remix) The return of one of modern French house's finest duos - Miss Phantom (the brain child of Opierm and Sboulouf Le Detective) released a true club slammer on June 7th - and to no-one's surprise, it is absolutely awesome. For those that don't know, the Miss Phantom project is directly inspired by blog house legend The Phantom's Revenge - and the duo have managed to perfectly replicate the man's sound while remixing "God Damn" by Tokyo based producer KNMN - who it got the attention of pretty quickly.  This track is pure awesomeness - the sample selection and chopping is fantastic (as always) and the drums are super punchy - it reminds ...

My top five French house songs from the blog house era! (2007-2012)

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. Today I thought I'd do something a little bit different - seeing as summer is arriving (AKA peak house music season!) - on this post I'm going to rank my five favourite songs from the second era of French house music, most prominent between 2007-2012 - so you can get some bangers into your summer playlist (or rediscover them if you're a huge fan!) I hope you enjoy reading. 5 - Louis La Roche - Peach (2008) The titular track from London based house maestro Louis La Roche's debut EP is an awesome little tune. A flip of "All of You" by Diana Ross and Julio Iglesias - La Roche adds his signature groovy touches, some pumping drum work and great chops to create what is undeniably a classic of the late 2000s filter house era - and it is very easy to see why the guy is now extremely well regarded for his production work today. Also - note that the dude was 17 when he made this. Major props. Louis La Roche - Peach 4 - Va...

All of the great things released in May!

Hey everyone, and welcome back at the discotheque! May was a crazy month in the French house and future funk scenes - and due to my finals starting - I basically missed out on being able to write about it all! (sorry, you can blame GCSEs for that one!) - however I now have a bit of time on my hands to talk about some of the freshest new releases from lots of awesome people. If you're a regular reader of the blog - there's some people you'll recognize, but there's also lots of new talents that I'd love to cover in this post - so without further ado - let's look at all of the awesome things that released in May 2025. Da Funkin' Punks (DJ Chidow and Myujikku) - Bits and Pieces This is very likely one of the most impressive house music projects I've ever listened to. A two volume series produced by DJ Chidow and Myujikku - Bits and Pieces is the ultimate Daft Punk tribute - filled with fantastic tracks, mashups and remixes inspired by the duo's most ico...
