My top five French house songs from the blog house era! (2007-2012)

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque.

Today I thought I'd do something a little bit different - seeing as summer is arriving (AKA peak house music season!) - on this post I'm going to rank my five favourite songs from the second era of French house music, most prominent between 2007-2012 - so you can get some bangers into your summer playlist (or rediscover them if you're a huge fan!)

I hope you enjoy reading.

5 - Louis La Roche - Peach (2008)

The titular track from London based house maestro Louis La Roche's debut EP is an awesome little tune. A flip of "All of You" by Diana Ross and Julio Iglesias - La Roche adds his signature groovy touches, some pumping drum work and great chops to create what is undeniably a classic of the late 2000s filter house era - and it is very easy to see why the guy is now extremely well regarded for his production work today. Also - note that the dude was 17 when he made this. Major props.

4 - Vanguard - So Much (2009)

Released by prominent Welsh production duo Vanguard (aka James Thomas and Tom Morgan) sometime in 2009, So Much is an awesome, funky track with some super nice production - making it a very good choice for summer parties and beach days - and also the most killer bass line ever - which is featured at the end of the track amongst the now practically iconic chops of Armenta's "I Wanna Be With You" - later sampled in 2015 by American future funk producer Macross 82-99 for his stellar track Fun Tonight.

Overall, a super rad tune that 100% deserves its spot on this list!

3 -  Les Années Folles - Limousine Trip (2010)

Released as part of Les Annees Folles' only EP from 2010 - Limousine Trip is a smooth, funky joint which sounds like it could have been made by Daft Punk in their Discovery era. With an awesome sample to boot (baked with a whole lot of groove) and some dope production (with a lot of side chain, may I add, but hey, this is blog house, what do you expect?) along with some killer hooks and fat bass make this track perfect for dropping at clubs. Side note to DJs - this is quite literally the track to put into your sets.

2 - Rubix - Baiser Sur La Disco (2009)
One of my favourite house tracks released just before the dawn of the new decade - Baiser Sur La Disco, produced by European DJ and producer Rubix (also of the Girls Love DJs crew) is one of my favourite disco house tracks of the late 2000s, and it is very easy to see why. It's a smooth, funky track with everything essential for a disco house track of the period - a great sample (and even better chopping) - funky drums, some serious low end and even some small vocal chops. I listen to this track very often, and I expect it to pop up in my DJ sets fairly frequently from this point forward.

Side note to DJs - this one's a real classic. Go and buy it. It'll really get some crowds moving.

1 - The Phantom's Revenge - I Heard You Were Dead (2010)
This list really wouldn't be complete without The Phantom's Revenge - who to me, is the greatest producer from this era, and to top off this list of my favourite French house songs from between 2007-2012, I feel like this is the best one of them all.

While it isn't a groundbreaking piece of work, I Heard You Were Dead incorporates some incredible chopping (god, these blades must be sharp!) - completely flipping "Gimme Sometime" by Natalie Cole and Peabo Bryson to a T. Furthermore, there isn't too much side chain (making this particular track of his very nice to listen to!) - there's some awesome percussion (and as always, some super punchy drums) throughout, and overall, this is my personal favourite blog house song of all time for all of those reasons!

There you have it, everyone.

Thanks for reading, and keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.

Crydamoure is back (technically)

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. For today's post, I thought I'd write about something a little bit different. Over the last nine months or so, a small group of independent producers have been making waves in the French house scene for a simple reason - they're bringing back the sound of legendary French label Crydamoure with style. If you've been living under a rock for the past few decades - or are relatively new to the French house scene - Crydamoure was the record label ran by Guy-Man (one half of legendary duo Daft Punk) and Rico Chedeville between 1997 and 2003. In it's years of operation, it quickly became one of the most respected labels of its time - releasing several EPs and singles which became classics - from fantastic artists such as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson, Play Paul, Sedat and Archigram, alongside Rico and Guy-Man themselves, under the alias "Le Knight Club" All of the records released through Crydamoure are of the highest orde...

Interview: Ghosts of Venice

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque! It's been a hot minute since there was an interview on the blog - and to make up for that, tonight we have somebody extremely special in the virtual hot seat - the incredible Ghosts of Venice. Known for his illustrious career spanning over a decade and a half - he's released on some of house music's biggest labels, produced some of the hottest tracks and remixes around, has over a billion streams under his belt - and he's also a pretty cracking DJ and promoter. With all of this in mind - I knew he had to get onto the blog! So, without further ado - I'll let him do the talking! For those who don’t know – who are you, what music do you make and where are you from?  My name is Lee Dunn, and I’ve gone by many monikers over the years, but most people know me as Ghosts of Venice. These days I mostly make Disco, and I’m from North Yorkshire, England. If you had to describe your sound to someone who’s never listened to your mu...
