Review: FIBRE's 2014-2016

Released through UK based label Savona in January 2017, FIBRE's first compilation album has been a personal favourite of mine in the future funk scene for years for so many different reasons - not to mention that it is genuinely an incredible piece of work.

Recorded over two years, this compilation contains twelve of the Washington based producer's most well known tracks - creating a smooth, fun listening experience across the thirty minutes that the LP runs for. Every track is upbeat, fun, exciting and produced expertly - the sample selections are awesome (I mean, it's FIBRE, you can expect that!) and his signature sound shines through on every track effortlessly, giving a new and fresh take on future funk with some obvious disco and French house influences sprinkled in.

Listeners may recognize some of these tracks from various sources (as an example, Don't Stop was released on Business Casual as part of the 810 EP back in 2016) however most will likely recognize tracks such as Supernatural, Nouvel Elan and SSM2044 as they were featured on legendary promotion channel Artzie Music when they were first released, bringing in hundreds of thousands of views - it's easy to see why many people love these tracks, as they individually have become cornerstones of the future funk scene from their endless replay ability and recognizable sampling techniques and hooks.

Side note to DJs: It'd be the BIGGEST shame not to drop some of these absolute bangers in your sets.

Aside from the fast paced, upbeat tracks featured on the majority of the album, FIBRE also includes some more chilled out cuts that are also just as good - examples include I'll Go Back - a funky track with tight, punchy production, the bubbly Highlights and With You - a fantastic closer to the album which is reminiscent of the funk and disco scenes of the 70s, which has a killer bassline and the grooviest drums. If Soul Train was still being aired, this would be a great fit for the show's opening.

Overall - this album truly is amazing, and it has a very special place in my heart for being my first exposure to future funk (if I hadn't checked out this album back in the summer of 2021, this blog wouldn't even have been a thing!) so I think the biggest thanks to FIBRE is in order - keep making brilliant music.

If you haven't stumbled down the future funk road and you want to - this is the perfect album to begin your journey. Amazing things await you.

Rating: 9/10

You can find FIBRE on all major music places - and make sure to go and check out his new single with Aritus which dropped today, along with some of his own original disco / dance pop works, which are absolutely incredible.

As always, keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.

Crydamoure is back (technically)

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. For today's post, I thought I'd write about something a little bit different. Over the last nine months or so, a small group of independent producers have been making waves in the French house scene for a simple reason - they're bringing back the sound of legendary French label Crydamoure with style. If you've been living under a rock for the past few decades - or are relatively new to the French house scene - Crydamoure was the record label ran by Guy-Man (one half of legendary duo Daft Punk) and Rico Chedeville between 1997 and 2003. In it's years of operation, it quickly became one of the most respected labels of its time - releasing several EPs and singles which became classics - from fantastic artists such as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson, Play Paul, Sedat and Archigram, alongside Rico and Guy-Man themselves, under the alias "Le Knight Club" All of the records released through Crydamoure are of the highest orde...

Interview: Ghosts of Venice

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque! It's been a hot minute since there was an interview on the blog - and to make up for that, tonight we have somebody extremely special in the virtual hot seat - the incredible Ghosts of Venice. Known for his illustrious career spanning over a decade and a half - he's released on some of house music's biggest labels, produced some of the hottest tracks and remixes around, has over a billion streams under his belt - and he's also a pretty cracking DJ and promoter. With all of this in mind - I knew he had to get onto the blog! So, without further ado - I'll let him do the talking! For those who don’t know – who are you, what music do you make and where are you from?  My name is Lee Dunn, and I’ve gone by many monikers over the years, but most people know me as Ghosts of Venice. These days I mostly make Disco, and I’m from North Yorkshire, England. If you had to describe your sound to someone who’s never listened to your mu...
