Interview: DJ Supernick

Hey everyone!

Today, we have a very awesome person joining the hot seat here at ATD - American producer and DJ Supernick - who has been making rounds this year after releasing some great music and being a fantastic archivist of the blog house scene. With this in mind, it was sooner or later that we got him in for an interview!

Anyway, that's enough of me - I'll let Supernick do the talking!

For those that don't know you - who are you, and what kind of music do you make?

I am a Disco house music producer from the Houston, Texas Metro. I am 20 years old. I used to figure skate and do cheerleading and tumbling.

What artists got you into French house music – and how long have you been listening to the genre?

Le Knight Club, The Disko Starz, and Poka.

If you could pick three artists you’d want to play a set with, who would they be?

The Disko Starz, Silver Disco, and The Phantom’s Revenge.

What equipment / programs do you make music with?

I used to use TwistedWave Audio Editor to measure BPM and precise loop time. However, in early April of this year, I started using Ableton. The reason why I started using it is because it’s much easier because it has more effects and gives more potential for a French house track.

Building onto that, tell us a bit more about the production process / what inspired you in your latest EP, released on Creux La Nuit.

It didn’t really take long for production. I started with a simple groove and then I loved it - that being “Never Knew” and after I downloaded Ableton, that’s when my sound kinda changed with “Italo Disco” and “Be My Life”

If you could pick three albums of any genre to take with you to a desert island – what would they be?

I would definitely say that the Paris By Night EP by The Disko Starz would be my vacation/travel album! I also really love the Killer Macrame EP from Club Cavalry. When I’m kinda bored I also listen to Mr. Oizo - Lambs Anger too.

There’s currently a blog house revival going on, and you recently started your own blog – tell us more about the House of Supernick.

House of Supernick, although I haven’t been posting much lately due to family business, I would come back if I had more time. Posting one of my songs could work, take “Sick Blade” for example, I did that one back in March.

Bit of a random one – what would be your dream country to live in?

Norway, or maybe Italy. European countries really have potential for being architectural and cultural for many reasons.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be?

Could be Silver Disco (Josh Hubi), or maybe Michael Jackson. They’re great people.

Another random one – what’s your favourite film?

Toy Story (OBVIOUSLY!)

What tips would you give to aspiring filter house DJs and producers?

Ableton is really good. The first thing I'd recommend - the auto filters really help if you want to get that French filter house sound. Also use flanger/phaser and even some sidechain in case you want more energy!

Do you want to give any shoutouts to anyone?

Everyone at Creux La Nuit and the blog house producers who made us even more aware that French house exists in our hearts!

There you have it everyone - you can find DJ Supernick in all of the usual places - his YouTube channel is particularly awesome. There will be links down below!

As always, keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.
