Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque!
Today we have another interview - yes, another interview - from an up and coming producer in the scene who's making some brilliant stuff - Future0s. A member of Creux La Nuit and the one dude you should go to for superhero covers - I knew I had to get him on the blog at some point - let's get to it!
For those that don’t know you, who are you and what music do you make?
I'm Future0s, a DJ and producer from Mexico. I make House music along with Future Funk which I'm more known for. Currently working with CLN along with appearances in other labels, such as Neon Soda Records, Steamtrax and Synchroma Records. I make mostly music that I'd hear myself, stuff made for me that I have fun making. If it's not fun, why bother?
What artists in particular got you into French house – and how long have you been listening to the genre?
I think it was around five years ago that I found out about French house. Before that, I had been listening to it before knowing what it was. Obviously there was Daft Punk and Justice, others were Soundstream, Alex Gopher, Demon, Etienne de Crécy, Armand Van Helden, Superfunk, The Phantom's Revenge and Cerrone which got me into it.
What equipment / programs do you use to make your tracks?
When I first started making music, I used to do mashups of videogame OSTs inspired by SiIvaGunner in a shady online djing website, I liked doing them myself rather than having RAVE doing it for me. I moved to Virtual DJ when I started making original songs. I just mixed the samples live and called it a day. It was fun planning where to make changes, practicing the final thing and making mistakes in the mix. While I was still doing that, I got a FLX4 which helped me improve on my mixes and live productions. After some months of that, Opierm taught me how to use Ableton and that's what I currently use along with Virtual DJ to fix some samples and media.
Are there any particular artists that you like to sample for your tunes, or it quite a mixed bag?
The most I've sampled is Cerrone, I was a big fan of it as I was discovering songs that sampled it. From there, it's been mixed. I sample the artists I discover or have in my library - listening to full albums and making some picks. Sometimes Disco, others R&B or even Jazz. Having an ample taste helps with sampling.
If you had to take three albums of any genre to a desert island, what would they be?
I'd have Since I Left You by The Avalanches, Grant Green's Visions, and Let's Dance Raw by Shintaro Sakamoto. I think I'd have a fun time hearing them before getting hungry and taking a bite out of them.
What would you say is your favourite “era” of French house music – the late 90s era, the early 2000s, the bloghouse era or the current era, and why?
While I like to have the whole story, I like the early 2000s. It was a more elaborate twist on house music, with advanced sampling and fresher ideas. It was the more experimented period of the genre. It's a trip going from the barebones "punchis punchis" of 1997 to the advanced sounds and experience of something like Wuz, Tempovision and Cassius.
Bit of a random one – Roule or Crydamoure?
I'd go with Crydamoure. The label's style is legendary and varied, with no fear of experimenting. For a long time, i thought Le Knight Club's Chérie D'Amoure was a song I made up in my dreams. Archigram's In Flight versions give so much energy, and I have a guilty pleasure for Hysteria II!
What would you say is the best song you’ve done – and what makes it your best?
It's a very hard pick, I'd say, technically, my version of Jack Of All Trades, Master Of None, originally a scrapped song by Opierm for CLN volume 2. He had shown me his original version with one less semitone and I had fallen in love with it. I worked on remixing it around the time he decided to can it.
The sample got expanded, got new beats, and a kickass intro. I believe it's the song that better represents who I am and what I do.
Another random one (can you tell I love these…) – what’s your favourite dessert?
I have a thing for cinnamon rolls. I know I'm doing good when I can just sit and have one.
Finally – do you want to give any shoutouts to anyone?
A big thanks to some great friends who have helped me and given me so much, Pegassus, Syncopator, Sboulouf, Ender Lion, Inquisite, Mike Sandcastles, the crew of Techos Rotos, and the people who spent their afternoons listening to my music. I thank all of them and they have a special place in my soul.
There you have it, everyone!
