Interview: DJ Double Dutch

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque.

Today we have another awesome person joining the hot seat here on at the discotheque - up and coming French house and electronica producer DJ Double Dutch (also known as DJ Dion for his fan-made Crydamoure work and also some excellent forays into big beat and rave influenced music!) - he's also a member of legendary French house collective Creux La Nuit, furthering his status as an excellent producer, DJ and writer. Without further ado, I'll let him do the talking!

For those who don’t know you, who are you and what music do you make?

Hello, my name is Dion Verhoef aka DJ Dion aka DJ Double Dutch - I mostly make dance music in general but i also make other genres (I primarily publish dance music!)

The music I publish under the name DJ Dion is like electronic dance music without any sampling, for DJ Double Dutch I primarily upload french house and other sampled songs and in general i keep that one less serious than DJ Dion.

You’ve just released two albums – your debut album as DJ Dion – “Noise” and most recently “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” on Creux La Nuit – can you tell us some of your influences for both of those projects?

Well, the influences for my album "Noise" go as far back as 2020, when I was listening to only Newgrounds artists and from that point the influences only grew with Deadmau5, Daft Punk (of course!) - Purple Disco Machine and other EDM/House artists from around 2010-now. For my album "I Have No Idea What I'm Doing" my inspirations are Daft Punk (they got me into french house and sampling), Fatboy Slim (he got me into big beat and also other ways of sampling!) and Ween (a rock duo I recently started listening to and I love how weird and random they are!)

What equipment do you use to make your music?

I mainly just use FL Studio 20 with the KSHMR Pack vol 3 and some other miscellaneous sample packs - for VSTs I use Nexus4 mostly but also some random ones here and there. For physical gear I have a Pocket Operator Speak that I used in one song on my album "Noise"

What equipment would you love to own in the future, and why?

I'd love to own the Roland TR-8S, it's just such a cool drum computer and I really want a Roland machine! (If I could I would also want an original TB-303 but thats a bit difficult...)

Building onto your work as DJ Dion, when you’re making your awesome fanmade Crydamoure releases, what’s usually the process behind making them?

I usually find a sample on YouTube first - where I'll find it either through an artist channel or a playlist, then when I've got the sample I get some parts and pitch, loop and put effects on them. When the sample is laid down I program some drums to put under them and I sequence the track, after all of that I add extras like vocal samples, cymbal crashes and filtering.

What’s your favourite film?

LEGO The Adventures Of Clutch Powers from 2010, such an amazing LEGO movie and one that I quote to this day!

If you had the chance to save the world with three of your favourite records, what would they be, and why?

1 - The Prodigy - Experience. It's, as the title says, an experience. Everyone must listen to it and it will surely keep you on your feet!

2- Fatboy Slim - You've Come A Long Way Baby. One of the best Big Beat albums I've heard and it will surely save a lot of lives (I hope...)

3- Justice - Audio, Video, Disco. Such a cool mix of electronic and rock which makes a perfect album (people will say otherwise but they stink!)

To you, what’s the best song you’ve made?

I would have to say So Much, it's the first song I've sung in that I'm proud of (I've sang in like 5-6 songs that are on Spotify, but you gotta find 'em!)

What’s your favourite food?

Chicken, it doesn't matter how it's served or what it's served with, if it's with chicken, it's already good!

If you had the opportunity to perform live with two of your musical heroes – who would they be?

Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality, the members of The Prodigy (RIP Keith Flint 1969-2019)

Now here’s a tough question – who is the best member of the Crescendolls to you?

Baryl, I love him so much!

What can we expect from you in the coming months?

There might be some singles coming from DJ Dion and maybe an EP from DJ Double Dutch!

Do you have any tips to give aspiring producers?

Just make whatever you want - you can look at tutorials on how to get the basics but don't follow them fully, be creative. If anyone says your music is trash, you can either take it as criticism, or just tell them you don't care and keep creating. Make whatever you want and don't let people tell you what to make, if it sounds good to you its good.

Do you want to give any shoutouts to anyone?

Shoutout to Luv4Loop, Opierm, Future0s, Fortyfeds, Da Syncopator, Hackosef, Phazon and Mike!

There you have it, everyone. You can find DJ Double Dutch on YouTube, SoundCloud and all of the good places. For now, I'll link his SoundCloud as Double Dutch and his YouTube as Dion!

As always, keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque!

Crydamoure is back (technically)

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. For today's post, I thought I'd write about something a little bit different. Over the last nine months or so, a small group of independent producers have been making waves in the French house scene for a simple reason - they're bringing back the sound of legendary French label Crydamoure with style. If you've been living under a rock for the past few decades - or are relatively new to the French house scene - Crydamoure was the record label ran by Guy-Man (one half of legendary duo Daft Punk) and Rico Chedeville between 1997 and 2003. In it's years of operation, it quickly became one of the most respected labels of its time - releasing several EPs and singles which became classics - from fantastic artists such as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson, Play Paul, Sedat and Archigram, alongside Rico and Guy-Man themselves, under the alias "Le Knight Club" All of the records released through Crydamoure are of the highest orde...

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque! It's been a hot minute since there was an interview on the blog - and to make up for that, tonight we have somebody extremely special in the virtual hot seat - the incredible Ghosts of Venice. Known for his illustrious career spanning over a decade and a half - he's released on some of house music's biggest labels, produced some of the hottest tracks and remixes around, has over a billion streams under his belt - and he's also a pretty cracking DJ and promoter. With all of this in mind - I knew he had to get onto the blog! So, without further ado - I'll let him do the talking! For those who don’t know – who are you, what music do you make and where are you from?  My name is Lee Dunn, and I’ve gone by many monikers over the years, but most people know me as Ghosts of Venice. These days I mostly make Disco, and I’m from North Yorkshire, England. If you had to describe your sound to someone who’s never listened to your mu...
