Late August drops!

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque.

Over the last week and a half, there's been some amazing new releases in French house, future funk and bloghouse from a multitude of amazing artists. Summer may be ending, but I have nothing but hope for these scenes going into autumn!

Without further ado, let's get started!

Skylar Spence - Practice / Affairs (Demo)

On August 27th, we were treated to two (technically) new singles from Brooklyn based producer, instrumentalist and icon Skylar Spence - also known as SAINT PEPSI in the future funk and vaporwave world. In celebration of his debut dance pop / disco album turning ten this year, Carpark are issuing a deluxe anniversary edition digitally and on vinyl - Practice and the demo for Affairs are two tracks featured on the bonus LP.

The demo for Affairs, to me, is just as good as the album version - it's fun, written extremely well, and is a welcome addition to the Prom King lore. That being said, to me - Practice is the standout - an amazing, upbeat and dope filter house track which, if you know Skylar's discography well - was the first song he produced under the moniker after switching from SAINT PEPSI in 2015 - it's an absolute joy to have both of these tracks on streaming, and Ryan - you're killing it, man. Looking forward to your new work!

You can find it on all good streaming platforms, but I'll link the Bandcamp for now.

Myd - Mydnight

There's no way I couldn't mention this on today's post!

Released on Ed Banger Records on August 29th, French producer Myd's new album is a real treat to listen to. It switches seamlessly between chilled out excursions, thumping house bangers built for clubs and sleek nu disco and pop tracks with some excellent collaborations to boot. It's got lush instrumentation, it feels summery, exciting, fun and due to how varied it is - it's an album built for repeated listening - there's something for everyone here!

My personal favourites from this great album include track two, Song For You - an extremely groovy, tight and fun disco infused house track with some fantastic synth work and the most killer bassline - Get Lucky and Intro may need to watch out - All That Glitters Is Not Gold, track three - an extremely smooth, headbanging hip hop collaboration between Myd, Trueno and Channel Trues, Make Me Feel Alive - which reminds me of the later work of blog house legend The Phantom's Revenge and The Wizard - a thumping future club weapon built to destroy parties with it's fast paced yet heavy production.

In short, this album is awesome, and truly an epic display of talent. You can find it on all good streaming services - but I'll link the Bandcamp, in case you want to grab the album digitally or on yellow and black vinyl.

Yelle - Ju Veux Te Voir (Broken Embraces Edit)

On August 25th, Uruguayan based producer Broken Embraces - known for head smashing electro bangers reminiscent of the bloghouse era - released a killer edit of Yelle's Ju Veux Te Voir - turning the original from a minimalist pop jam into a gnarly, rough club weapon which would fit perfectly into a DJ set from SebastiAn - while he's playing in a basement full of moshing people. In short, this remix is nuts (in true Broken Embraces fashion) and definitely one to check it out. You can find it on his SoundCloud.

The Dare - Freakquencies Volume 1

Building onto the theme of bloghouse and the current revival that is occurring, on August 22nd American producer and musician The Dare released Freakquencies Volume 1 - a four track EP packed with club weapons and heavy house tracks for those darker nights. At it's core, it's a bloghouse EP with lots of jittery, rough synth work (looking at you, Tambourine and Kick!) - but there's also some very quirky, fun bits too - Exhilaration is a bass heavy banger with some great production - and Modelizer is a glitzy, yet at times gnarly track which reminds me of the work of SebastiAn extremely heavily.

This EP is awesome - go and give it a listen!

You can find it on most streaming platforms - I'll link it here through Spotify.

An announcement from the Creux La Nuit headquarters...

So - On the 13th of September - tune into now legendary French house collective Creux La Nuit's Twitch to celebrate their second birthday party- there's going to be DJ sets from a huge number of people - including Opierm, Future0s, Inky - TS, Guv'nor Funk, DJ Double Dutch, CitrikkAcid, Le Sorv, Artemis Morte, Luv4Loop, Sboulouf Le Detective and myself - it's going to be dope, so make sure to tune in!

Here's another poster, designed by Guv'nor Funk - inspired by the cover of Daft Punk's Homework.

Cherokee - Sampled Moods Volume Two

On August 22nd, I was extremely excited to find out that Cherokee - a legend in the later era of the disco blog explosion for hits such as "Sable Doux" and "Take Care of You" had released a new EP - and boy, did he deliver. This EP is a smooth selection of six fantastically produced filtery house jams and sleek nu disco cuts, with collaborations from Raph Marques and June One present. Fans of the French producer will notice that, just like the first Sampled Moods EP, that these tracks have previously been released as singles - which isn't a bad thing at all, as now more have access to these brilliant tracks.

My personal favourites on this excellent compilation EP are Keep Dreaming, Feel Good and Believe in Yourself - Feel Good is a textbook, yet fantastic example of modern filter house music - it reminds me heavily of Digital Love by Daft Punk - Keep Dreaming is a glamorous, yet groovy jam with some fantastic production - and Believe in Yourself is a beautiful, summery nu disco jam with some fantastic instrumentation, percussion work and dazzling vocals from Raph Marques - but the other tracks on Sampled Moods Volume Two are just as great in their own unique and fun ways.

In short - this release is pure brilliance. Check it out now.

You can find it on Spotify.

Never Dull - PUMPIN'

Released on August 29th through Lick My Disco, Never Dull's new EP is short, yet sugary sweet - with three thumping nu disco and house jams to set you perfectly up through autumn. The titular track of the EP is a true club weapon - it's groovy, extremely funky and at points, extremely heavy - making it a true banger set for clubs, festivals and venues. Side note to DJs: It would be a disappointment not to have this in your crate.

The EP's other two tracks, Bounce and Big Disco Energy, are also incredible - with some fantastic production from Never Dull, some great instrumentation (the bassline on Big Disco Energy is absolutely killer!) and a whole lot of groove - these tracks are absolutely awesome, and although summer is ending - these tracks will make you long for those hot nights.

You can find it on Spotify.

Poetically - Bye Bye Love

On August 29th, FIBRE's legendary record label Montaime returned after nearly two years with an awesome single from Denmark based producer and vocalist Poetically, titled Bye Bye Love. To me, this single feels like an ode to the late 2000s French boom, with some added smoothness, a crap ton of bass and some dope production. Whenever I listen to this, I'm reminded slightly of Uffie for some reason - this single feels like something that would have ended up going big in the blog house era - and for that, it absolutely gets a thumbs up from me. It's catchy, short and sweets - leaving any listener to hit that replay button.

You can find it on Bandcamp.

There you have it, everyone!

I hope you've enjoyed this post - make sure to follow the blog, and as always - keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.
