Review: Mr Hoosteen's No Time 2 Lose

Released initially through OMEAC Records in 2020 - and later through legendary label Montaime in the summer of 2023 - future disco king Mr Hoosteen's second album is nothing short of breathtaking. It's a seamless, epic journey from start to finish, weaving in smooth grooves, darker cuts built for the night and thumping club weapons to create an extremely memorable and fun listening experience from a criminally underrated artist.

No Time 2 Lose is, at heart - a filter house and disco album which is packed with lush instrumentation, absolutely incredible production and some cracking collaborations throughout. Looking in deeper - to me, this album feels like a ride through a futuristic city and it's various locations. It's glitzy, fun, elegant at times and mysterious and intriguing at various points.

The album opens with a host of nu disco and filter house jams which are extremely funky, upbeat and groovy - the amazing titular track - which reminds me of the work on various underground labels of the 90s, such as Crydamoure and Vertigo - the stylish Vanguard and the summer anthem "I Want To Be Your Tomorrow" - an extremely fun, smooth jam featuring American singer Becca Jon (this is one of my favourite tracks on the album!)

The middle of the album follows suit with lots of different moods and styles - there's barrels of smooth, airy jams such as Metropolis - a melancholic, synth led house track which reminds me somewhat of the work of Skylar Spence, mixed in with the vibes of Daft Punk's second album Discovery - and the mystical banger 2020 - featuring Alex Wind's wonderful vocal work and some extremely polished, funky production from Hoosteen - but there's also some club weapons stuffed in too - such as the extremely bouncy "Mind of Mercury" which I can imagine DJ Sneak spinning in a Chicago club in 1997. Need I say more? I don't think so.

Although there are plenty of upbeat and stylish offerings on this album - two of my favourite tracks are towards the end - "Demuth" and "Neue" - both of these tracks take on a much darker edge. Demuth is a disco techno track which feels influenced by acid house (a staple of Mr Hoosteen's past and current work!) which oozes with quality - it's quite possibly the most refined cut on the album due to it's awesome production, synth work and thumping beats - I imagine it being played in the smoking room of a futuristic club - whereas Neue is a very funky French house banger with some great sampling techniques and sweet beats, following on from Demuth's stylish feel.

The album closes with two amazing tracks - "One Day" featuring Chello and Christopher Lawless - a polished, vibrant nu-disco jam which reminds me heavily of the work of early Jamiroquai - and the futuristic, uptempo jam "Deux Mile" - a synth led track built for parties, endless dancing in the sun and those long, hot summer days. A perfect way to close the album, I think!

Overall, this album is absolutely fantastic - it's everything that you want in a filter house and disco album - with plenty of variety, stylistic influences and an all killer tracklist stuffed with memorable moments, grooves, and fun, No Time 2 Lose is a future classic. A must listen.

There you have it, everyone!

I thought I'd do a review on this album as it's one of my favourites - and yes, I'm aware that this review is a lot more "high brow" than my usual ones - but this album is an extremely vibrant listen, and with Mr Hoosteen's added talents as a fantastic visual artist, I feel like lots of metaphors and comparisons were needed to capture the adventure this album takes you on!

I hope you enjoyed reading, and keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.

  1. YASSSSSSS, finally someone review this album, i listen to it many months ago and at first i thought it was bland and boring, but after i listen to it a dozen of times, it was getting better and better. "Metropolis" definitely my fav track hands down, it took me back in middle school days (end of 2019 to March 2020) before covid pandemic started. It has that loop that gave me goosebumps.
