Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque!
Last night, after much anticipation - The Daft Punk Experience launched on Fortnite - and in my humble opinion, it is awesome. For those that have been living under a rock - it was announced a few weeks ago that Daft Punk would have their own in-game skins and cosmetics, and that there would be a game mode dedicated entirely to their work.
So, last night - me and a bunch of others from French house collective Creux La Nuit (in particular - Guv'nor Funk, Opierm, Luv4Loop and DJ Supernick - Sboulouf Le Detective came in for the minigames!) joined forces and explored the event together. What followed was a night of practical chaos, but a lot of fun - here's what went down at this killer event!
The Daft Punk Experience opened with players being taken through a portal directly up into space - while Contact - the final song from Daft Punk's legendary final album Random Access Memories played. Then, players flew directly through an incredible light show containing references to tons of the duo's work - there was an appearance from Stella of the Crescendolls at the beginning (which I got very excited about!) and also the lyrics from Human After All, Technologic and Robot Rock appearing several times.
After the amazing visuals, players landed onto what looked to be a desert planet - however those that are huge fans of Daft Punk will know it is where the end of their 2006 film Electroma was set - and where the Epilogue was set. Players walked until finding Thomas' helmet - and players then accessed memories by putting the helmet on. For me and the CLN crew - this was a moment which had us all pretty shocked - and by that, we were all collectively screaming.
Players were then transported outside of a large, glowing pyramid, and upon going in - we were officially at an incredible in-game recreation of Alive 2007.
This was an extremely awesome way to open the event - and ALL of Alive 2007's set list was played within half an hour - complete with some incredible visuals tying in with the duo's incredible work (above is an image taken by Guv'nor Funk from when One More Time / Aerodynamic played) - The Crescendolls appeared as a full band, alongside Shep's iconic ship, featured in the original Interstella 5555 film - for the opening of the concert when Touch Ir / Technologic played - there was a large replica of the music video mascot - shown below - and there was also tons of large scale replicas of the robots, fantastic lighting, effects and overall - it was a great atmosphere!
Aside from the killer concert that consistently repeats so newcomers can watch it at any time - the team at Epic Games delivered with buckets of bonus content, mini games and quirky things that make this new game mode super awesome - let's break them down!
Robot Rock Arena:
One of the most awesome features of this brand new event is the inclusion of a Robot Rock themed mode - a third person shooter mode featuring twenty waves of enemies which spawn around the venue themed map. Alongside this - the Alive 2007 version of Robot Rock, Harder Better Faster Stronger, Contact, Technologic and Giorgio by Moroder play through each wave - which is super awesome. I've always wanted to see a Daft Punk shooter game with their music as a soundtrack. To add, when you shoot the enemies - you do so on beat to the song playing - and the enemies die on beat too. Neat!
(Below is Opierm's score in a 4-player game where he carried us - even completing the mini game and defeating all of the waves!)
The Daft Club:
Yes, you read that right - there's now an official Daft Club!
Named after the online service active in the early 2000s and the remix album from 2003 - this part of the event has a fully fledged club inside - with tons of spots to dance with your friends, very awesome lighting, programming and effects - and you can also spot Daft Punk themselves sitting together upstairs - as a reference to the Random Access Memories era. It's a super awesome and neat addition to this already killer event!
Below is a photo DJ Supernick took of Daft Punk upstairs in the club when he was playing on mobile:
And here's a photo of inside the club:
Dream Chamber Studios:
In the entrance to the event, if you went upstairs, you could find a Tron Legacy inspired room (which looked absolutely fantastic!) - where you could check out some sweet Daft Punk memorabilia (as shown in the photo above) - as well as create your own mashups of some of Daft Punk's best tracks. Me and the rest of the CLN crew had a ton of fun doing this for a good 20 minutes - we created some dope mashups, but also some equally cursed (and stupid) ones at that.
One thing I also loved about the mashup feature is they included loads of Daft Punk's discography - most of Random Access Memories was in there - three songs from Homework, four from Discovery, three from Human After All - one from Alive 2007, and also Starboy, which was great to see. All in all, a fun little room that I'm going to be spending a lot of time in over the coming weeks!
Around The World in LEGO:
Finally, alongside the new LEGO pyramid bundle that arrived in the Item Shop a few days ago - in the event, you can access a mini game in which you are able to make your own version of the iconic Around The World music video - and also dance around various characters, too. This recreation is super awesome, detailed and very fun - and I'll likely be spending a fair bit of time in this mini-game alongside the others included!
Conclusion:
In short - this event was absolutely brilliant. As a massive fan of Daft Punk - being able to experience the grand opening of something so awesome and detailed - all with some fantastic friends in the process, made this one of the most awesome nights ever. The Daft Punk Experience is available in game for the next five weeks - so be sure to go and check it (also, look out for Charles, the dog from the Da Funk video!)
