Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque!
We're now heading towards the end of March - and as I always say - over the last two weeks, there's been so, so many monumental drops from a multitude of amazing people - alongside a whole bunch of sweet news. In this post - there's several returning talents, many underrated cuts and a few new people for you to check out - so without further ado, let's get started!
Together - Together (Lamorn Remix)
To kick-start this post off - I wanted to shine a huge light on one of the most impressive remixes I've likely ever listened to. Released independently on various platforms on March 15th - the brand new remix of Thomas Bangalter and DJ Falcon's legendary French touch anthem Together - done expertly by Arizona based producer and multi-instrumentalist Lamorn - is genuinely stunning, and at points, extremely beautiful.
While the original track, released twenty-six years ago, is a warm, catchy classic that echoes in the minds of millions - this edit re-invents it completely - adding an electro-house twist with loads of brilliant synthesis and crystal clear production. Furthermore - it's done in such a way that, although it's a little more heavy and built for clubs, it retains all of the sun-drenched emotion of the original, while also adding references to Daft Punk's work in tribute - I lost my mind when the vocals from Give Life Back to Music were included in this!
To sum it up - this really is incredible - and, although we're only in March - I genuinely think that this is one of the hottest remixes to come out this year. Thanks for the recommendation, Instagram!
You can find it on his Bandcamp and SoundCloud pages, respectively - the Bandcamp is linked below so you can support Lamorn directly!
Alan Braxe and Fred Falke - Intro (25th Anniversary Edition)
Building onto the topic of classic French house that's iconic and beautiful - if you bumped into any French house fan on the 20th and asked them "What are you excited about today?" - there's a high chance that they'd have directed you to this - the 25th anniversary re-issue of Intro by two of France's most legendary talents - Alan Braxe and Fred Falke. After being announced back in mid-January - everybody (quite rightfully) went mad - and orders for the limited edition vinyl and digital came in swiftly - and for great reason!
On this re-issue is the original track - which still stands as one of the most recognizable and amazing house tracks of all time - the killer Fred Falke remix, which was covered on the blog back in early February - and finally, the long-awaited Alan Braxe remix, which dropped alongside the vinyl. As to be expected from Braxe - his remix, although slightly more experimental - is an absolute gem - it's glitzy, it's deeply nostalgic, it's built for smashing out at clubs just when everyone's at an emotional high - and above all, it's super, super sweet (and the bassline got an even bigger upgrade - I swear, at this point, just inject it into my veins...)
You can grab this release through Bandcamp digitally and on vinyl through Smuggler's Way now.
Kouek - Superwave
Now, in the introduction to this post - I said that there was some "monumental" drops to cover - and I'm pleased to report that this is definitely something huge - released last Friday through legendary independent label My Pet Flamingo - Superwave is the brand new record from France-based producer Kouek - who, over the last couple of years, has become one of future funk's pivotal figures. This album cements his status as a true legend of the scene - as it's packed with so much incredible music, some legendary collaborations and a whole lot of grooviness.
There's a ton of stuff to explore on this album, so I'll try and do it in the best way I can - at heart, Superwave is a gorgeous future funk and French house record stuffed with some incredible tracks, catchy ear-worms that are set to define the next few years, and some incredibly quirky outings in vaporwave and trip-hop to diversify this already stunning body of work. The first half of this album sets the overall tone with ease - opening with a string of already classic singles before going into different waters with punchy, disco influenced hip-hop and dreamy vaporwave. My favourites from this part of Superwave include the fun (and hilarious) classic Holiday - which was initially covered on the blog back in August - the rich, Artzie-era sounding banger Wanna Dance and the brilliant Maxi - which sounds like an Alan Braxe track through and through!
The second half of Superwave is just as good, if not even better - it's filled with future funk and filter house which is guaranteed to set clubs alight, make your summer days even brighter and fit very nicely amongst everything else that's been coming out lately. Opening with another shiny single, the fantastic Poolside - things soon take some rather interesting turns, with the deep, trippy classic In The Middle, the supercharged, hard hitting track that is Game On - the fantastic Like That - a filtery, warm house outing littered with acid influence done with Party Night - and finally, after a small vaporwave break - the brilliant, yet slightly emotional future classic Ever Dreamer - ending out Superwave on an impossibly high note.
To sum it up - this is Kouek's most cohesive, and brilliant record to date. If you're a future funk fan, and you haven't caught up to this yet - I implore you to grab it right now.
You can find Superwave on all streaming platforms - however, I'm going to link the Bandcamp below, where you can buy it digitally, and also on limited edition vinyl and cassette.
Feed Me - Tamp Tamp Tamp (Broken Embraces Remix)
The return of Broken Embraces - quite possibly electro house's most iconic new talent - has been utterly glorious so far - and this remix only proves that further. Released on Thursday night through his SoundCloud page - in true Broken Embraces fashion, this remix is ridiculously epic, hard-hitting, mental and quite frankly, insane. While the original track, released as part of Feed Me's self-titled album - is a glamorous, tight and energetic synth led house outing - Broken Embraces turned it up to eleven for this one - and made it far more dark, demanding and heavy - mirroring the early work of Ed Banger artists such as Justice and SebastiAn. If you're into your French electro - be sure to give this a spin - you won't be disappointed!
Go and stream it now.
Fred Again and Thomas Bangalter's performance at Alexandra Palace was insane!
Now, some of you readers may be wondering why I'm mentioning this iconic gig a month after it happened - however, the reason is very, very simple - about a week ago, Fred Again confirmed that his legendary back to back with Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk, and the man behind several incredible projects in electronic music!) was recorded - and on Friday night, it was announced that it would be shown in its entirety on YouTube. As you can largely expect - the internet went absolutely insane - with the event being reported on DJ Mag, NME, Pitchfork and several social media platforms. I watched it with my good friends Opierm, Luv4Loop and Phobos - and what followed, was two hours of musical mayhem delivered by some of the greatest to ever do it.
The second Thomas walked on stage - everyone went absolutely insane - and to kick the set off - he played One More Time (which, as you can imagine, sent everyone into a frenzy!) before the first hour began - and it was filled with so many great tracks, that many people were scrambling to know what got played - there was, of course, Daft Punk classics, garage and house to set the place alight, early rave classics (such as the great LFO, released on Warp Records back in 1990) - incredible mashups, ghetto bangers, orchestral interludes and... Usher.
Yeah, I'm not kidding.
The second half of the set was even more insane - and included even more incredible mashups (some of which had me screaming!) - a bunch of undisputed classics, such as Music Sounds Better With You, which was initially interpolated on a drum machine synced to the decks, before being smashed out to an elated crowd of ten thousand people - emotional cuts from Fred's catalogue, blog-era classics such as Bangalter's seminal edit of Signatune by DJ Mehdi, more Daft Punk classics, and of course - it closed, with the final track being One More Time.
Truly - being able to attend the premiere of this show was such an unbelievable honor, and seeing a room filled with ten-thousand people, all living in the moment, being together and having fun just made the whole experience even more amazing. I truly believe, that this show has proved to me - that house music can bring people together like nothing else can - and in a world which is ever confusing and strange, especially these days - that we should be choosing love.
Go and watch the full set now. It is truly, one of, if not the most beautiful performance I have ever, ever seen.
Musanoise - Sideways
Released everywhere this Friday - Sideways is the brand new single from Peru based producer Musanoise - who some of you may know from his previous work as Itami Dakusu. As to be expected from this incredible producer - this single is absolutely fantastic, mixing the sounds of hyper-pop, French electro and house expertly to create an upbeat, and deeply melodic release that would fit in many different scenarios - on fun days out with your friends, parties, in art projects and animations, or just for grooving in your bedroom. Sound-wise, it feels like an extremely epic crossover between the work of Snail's House, Moe Shop and various late 90s French house producers, due to how punchy and warm it sounds - and above all, this single is incredibly unique, bursting with joy and I can guarantee you, that upon first listen, you'll be hooked!
You can grab it now from his Bandcamp page!
DJ Chidow and Myujikku - Le Voyage
Released on Wednesday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Daft Punk's sophomore album Discovery - everybody's favourite Minnesota-based producer and DJ Chidow - alongside his virtual sidekick Myujikku. came in hot with a killer remix of Voyager - one of Daft Punk's biggest (and best) jams. While the original is a filtery nu disco classic with gorgeous production, funky instrumentation and softer vibes - the duo decided to re-work it completely, turning it into a funky, punchy club weapon complete with deep, snappy production, lots of warmth and low end, and some added flamboyance for good measure!
You can find the amazing (and fun) music video on DJ Chidow's YouTube channel - which features the Crescendolls heavily, played by Queen A.G through VRChat!
Lorean - The Voice Within
To end out this post - I wanted to shine a light on the fantastic new single from underground nu disco / French touch duo Lorean - who released their latest, and extremely funky offering last Friday (wow, Friday really was a great day!) - this was my first time hearing about them, and boy, I am seriously impressed - this track is a lush display of talent, which is incredibly smooth, filled with exquisite, squeaky clean production, and the instrumentation is stunning throughout. Furthermore, this single is incredibly full bodied - it's stuffed with thicker textures, making it a great track to test your new speakers on (listening to it now, it absolutely kicks on my monitors!) - and overall, this is truly a brilliant new release.
You can find it on their SoundCloud now - and be sure to check out some of their other work, including what looks to be their forthcoming LP - titled Imagine.
There you have it, everyone!
I hope you've enjoyed reading today's post - I've been experimenting lately with a different type of post, where I do promotion posts every two weeks rather than weekly - so this way, you guys have more to read when new posts drop. I hope you're liking this change so far - there'll be another post out before the end of the month!
As always, be sure to support all of the artists that have featured in today's post, and as usual - keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.
