Creux La Nuit's third birthday bash was epic!

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque!

I'm incredibly excited to write today's post (and I apologize for the gap, I've been really, really busy with college and life in general!) - as last Sunday, international filter house collective Creux La Nuit turned three, and celebrated with a huge day long stream that doubled down as a radio station, virtual party and mini festival, with several artists on the label coming together to deliver something truly epic, and before you ask - yes, it did one-up last year's party, and by miles!

What I hope for this post to include, is a small rundown of CLN's history for new readers and fans, alongside detailed features for what was played on the radio station - and all of the DJ sets from ten of the members (including yours truly!) - so I hope you enjoy reading and listening back to what was a super awesome event.

Let's get started!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CREUX LA NUIT:

Creux La Nuit (which I think means 'the hollowness of night'?) was founded in Montevideo, Uruguay by Opierm on September 6th 2023 - and it very quickly began to establish itself as the premier spot for French house and electro in the modern scene over the next fifteen months or so, with several of the blog's biggest mainstays joining up, including American producer Phobos, Mexico's finest disco and house aficionado Future0s, electro wunderkind Hollowire and Brazil's very own Le Sorv - with the collective (as it was known at the time!) having put out twenty one releases and the first of its 'Essential Mix' series, the man behind the decks being New-Jersey based producer CitrikkAcid - by the end of 2024.

As the label slowly began turning two, an audience slowly started to form, and after a slightly quieter winter period, the collective came in full swing by the springtime when several new artists joined the roster - this included Brazilian master mayo1109, who later went on to form the duo Funkaholic with Le Sorv, future co-owners Luv4Loop and Inky, Deladapt regular ZeroZed, and me - dreamer eighty seven. To boot, the label released two major compilations and several iconic records of the modern French touch scene - including Guv'nor Funk's debut Coastline, head honcho Opierm's killer Number One EP and also the first major release from Vanguard tribute trio La Voyage.

To celebrate the label's second year in operation, a huge, two-day virtual festival was hosted on the weekend of September 13-14th, featuring fourteen DJ sets, visuals and extras, and it was around that time that the label also began to expand into doing more live work, with several of CLN's roster participating in more online gigs (including events for the blog itself and sleazed*) - and talks began at the end of the year for a fourth major compilation, whilst the end of the year brought tons of amazing singles and EPs, setting the label up for a pretty awesome 2026.

As the new year came, it started with a huge bang that came in the form of three brand new releases - the debut single from Californian producer Diskovertz, Guv'nor Funk's second album which is absolutely incredible, and Luv4Loop's chillwave album 'What Has Gotten Into You' in the span of twenty four hours - and following on from this, the label got further support from the likes of Grammy award winning singer and producer Todd Edwards, Baltimore-based musician FIBRE, Don Yaya, Mike Sandcastle and New York's finest icon Mr. Hoosteen - before the label opened up a merchandise store, started releasing CD and vinyl issues of some of the label's best releases - and some incredible new material from the likes of Dequame, Phobos and even future funk legend Reppop, bringing us to the day of the third birthday bash!

THE RADIO:

CLN's third birthday party was initially conceived as an extra special edition of the label's radio series that's hosted normally on Twitch - and rather than it running for one to two hours (I think the most it had gone for up until last Sunday was around three?) - this edition was planned to be around eight hours, yet it was initially expanded to ten after all of the preparations and DJ sets were complete.

Around a week before it went live, Opierm and Luv4Loop began compiling a massive playlist of tracks that encompassed French house (well, that's to be expected!) - disco, garage, electro house and a few other quirky extras in there for good measure, before placing them into a huge Ableton Live project and adding jingles, messages from several of the members and lots and lots of compression to nail that 'radio sound' that lots of people love, before the idea of a potential talk show intermission was brought into circulation involving me and Canadian DJ and producer Guv'nor Funk - so after some thinking, all of us got together and recorded what is essentially the debut of The Dreamer Eighty Seven and Guv'nor Funk Show, where, after me and Guv'nor discussed future plans for the label and general scene news, we both interviewed Russian producer Gliczide to discuss his record label Flowerside, the plunderphonics genre and his own music - before listeners were treated to several hours of curated classics in between exclusive DJ sets.

Speaking of that - I think it's time that I, like last year, break down every set in the best way I can - this is where the birthday bash got particularly epic, so buckle your seat belts, readers, because you're in for a bunch of amazing treats.

Opening Set: Future0s

Everyone knows the saying that first impressions last, and I always feel like when you're opening for an event, there's a lot of pressure involved. You're the first DJ that people get to hear that day, and in my eyes, the opening set has the ability to set the tone expertly, if it's done right, and I'm pleased to report that everyone's favourite underground Mexican producer - which is obviously Future0s, did a spectacular job, bringing his digital DJ bag filled with city pop, club bangers, funk and warm filtery classics to deliver a rambunctious offering of sixteen tracks that's as eclectic as it is deeply memorable, and I have to admit, this was one of my favourite sets of the entire event - likely because it scratched all of the itches in my brain, so I'm sure it'll do the same for many, many readers!

Opening with a sweet slice of what I'd consider to be Latin-influenced city pop (yes, he always does this, but can you blame the man?) - listeners are very quickly launched into a string of club weapons that wouldn't exactly sound out of place on Thomas Bangalter's legendary set for We in October 1999, including the likes of David Morales, Basement Jaxx, Cricco Castelli and Todd Edwards - before some (very welcome!) curve balls are thrown, with Future dropping several unreleased cuts, slamming future funk from Topaze Club founder Flammy, before ending out with everybody's favourite Phantom (courtesy of a remix from Esto!) alongside Tiger and Woods, The Cardigans and Ice.

If you're in a bit of a rush, and want to stick something awesome on that lasts around half an hour that'll make you feel relaxed one minute, pumped one minute and aggressively dancing by the next - I urge you to crank this, and loudly, if possible.

Set Two: Opierm

It wouldn't have been a Creux La Nuit party without the label's original founder Opierm stepping up to the decks, and although it would have been tough following up after such a golden set from Future - I can absolutely assure you, readers, that he absolutely delivered, bringing with him a host of French house bangers that serve as pure, recognizable classics, whilst also sprinkling in some newer workouts from the likes of Provi, Boogietraxx and a particularly raunchy track from Vaudafunk (which, somehow wasn't the reason the YouTube stream got suspended - more on that later!) to essentially create a mix that'll have every die hard fan of the Uruguayan legend hooked from the moment they press play.

Opening with a string of golden age house jams - namely, Silvering by enigmatic French producer Nicholas, which was initially released on Demon's legendary label 20000st and a mainstay in iconic German artist Ian Pooley's crate, and Follow This Beat, which was written by one of Chicago's late hometown heroes, the incredible Paul Johnson, may I add - everybody settled in, cranked the volume up and turned the strobes on as the tracks kept coming. Alongside the mention of the newer jams above, Patrick took it upon himself to, like Future did, come in hot with loads of warm Parisian sounding bangers - with the likes of German legend Patrick Alavi, Kid Creme and label mate Dequame also making their appearances as the set drew to a close, and overall, if I had to put it in the best way possible - next summer, I better hear some cars drive past me cranking this mix, or have it blasting from a boombox on the beach. 

It's an absolute belter of a set. Get jamming!

Set Three: La Bourbelette

Now, I'm going to be honest with y'all - I don't really know many people in Switzerland that make filter house music, and I feel like that needs to change, so if any Swiss people are here reading this post today and want to get started in this ever growing scene, then look no further than the guy carrying the flag, who also doubles down as one of the country's finest superheroes. You've seen him under many names on this blog, but for now, I feel La Bourbelette will do - and it is my great pleasure to be able to write this next feature on another killer set that, while short, packs an unbelievable punch, and offers something pretty damn unique, whilst managing to surf through a massive range of emotions. It's happy, exhilarating, melancholic and nostalgic all at the same time - so of course, it gets a thumbs up from me!

While the last two sets on the birthday bash felt very 90s influenced at every turn - La Bourbelette's offering is packed to the brim with loads of blog-era classics, huge, energetic rock riffs, tons of 80s influence and uplifting, punchy tracks that wouldn't sound out of place in a well produced, Hollywood blockbuster film, with the likes of Camaro Kids, DJ Color, Poka, Evil Stereo and Vostok-1 appearing throughout this twenty-six minute epic that in many ways is extremely cinematic, deeply playful and in general, a whole ton of fun (I'm not sure why I keep mentioning films when talking about this particular set, I just kind of got that vibe upon first listen - but it may have been due to the fact that his new single Spidey, which serves as a direct tribute to the Spider-Man series features in the middle too...)

To sum this set up in the best way I possibly can - if you're in the mood this weekend for something to stick on to feel motivated and excited, then you should look no further than this pretty damn sweet selection of absolute bangers. Bonus points for the dropping of Vostok-1's stunning remix of Gwen Stacy, too!

Set Four: DJ Double Dutch

Building onto the topic of unique sets - after three absolutely killer outings from the crew, I genuinely thought it couldn't get any better, and I was very quickly proven wrong just minutes after Netherlands-based musician, singer-songwriter and producer DJ Double Dutch stepped on to the virtual stage - as he decided to take the twenty odd listeners on CLN's YouTube and Twitch channels on an epic, ridiculous and insanely brilliant ride through his mind - a stomping odyssey of early rave bangers, big beat classics, disco flavored club weapons and deep, melodic stuff to boot, and it quickly won over listeners for so, so many different reasons - I mean, for one, the track list is absolutely stacked with so many recognizable names from multiple eras, and in general, it's an extremely smooth, genre hopping adventure that showcases the man's skills expertly, whilst being a mix that'll directly appeal to everyone who's been exploring electronic music and its many offshoots for years, such as me!

After opening with The Blessed Madonna and Kungs, things very quickly ramped up as the Dutchman pulled out a killer selection of crowd destroying cuts from the likes of The Phantom's Revenge (namely, his incredible classic Last Man Standing) - Moby, big beat pioneers such as Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers (readers, you need to get yourself high!) alongside Demon, Basement Jaxx and legendary French band Phoenix with their sentimental, warm, Olympic-featuring classic If I Ever Feel Better (I'll Go To The Disco) - as you can likely imagine, people were absolutely losing their minds!

Essentially, Dion's set was, and is, an absolute masterclass in the finest electronic music across the last three decades, and it's no surprise to see that it retrospectively got tons and tons of praise, particularly from New York's acid disco king Mr. Hoosteen - who readers will know from his releases for the likes of Montaime and his own label OMEAC - so if you just like this kind of music point blank and want to spin something that encompasses literally everything cool about electronic music as a whole, then be sure to give what is my favourite set of the entire bash, a much deserved spin, and be sure to watch out for his upcoming third album!

Set Five: dreamer eighty seven

As you can likely imagine, having to come on after all of these amazing sets felt pretty nerve racking, and while I know I said the same thing last year when writing the post about CLN's second birthday bash, I feel like everyone pulled out all of the stops for this celebration in particular - so I was quite nervous as to how my set would generally be recieved, especially amongst all of the many club bangers, damn fine excursions and practically zero misses from the entire crew so far. Regardless, in my forty minutes on the virtual stage, I decided to opt for lots of different things and try to sum up all of my major influences into a small, but pretty damn cool DJ set - in my digital crate of releases, I put in lots of French house, future funk, garage, blog-era bangers and even some pop and acid disco, and to my surprise, the set was recieved super well, and I'm extremely grateful to all of the people that tuned into it!

That being said, it was an extremely eventful three quarters of an hour, as a whole bunch of stuff happened whilst my selections were playing. After deciding to open with FIBRE's In A Vision (in particular, the tweaking, acid fueled remix from Mr. Hoosteen!) and the likes of Daft Punk, Da Syncopator and Fare Soldi - I decided to drop a special, unreleased mashup I made back in March of four different tracks from Waxmaster, Alan Braxe, Armand Van Helden and Daft Punk - before launching into one of Louis La Roche's finest classics (in case y'all are curious, that would be Touch Wood!) - and managing to get the stream suspended from YouTube for apparently violating copyright guidelines.

(Yes, I'm actually being completely serious...)

Aside from that mishap - everyone moved over to Twitch, where, as my set progressed, CLN ended up getting the highest number of viewers it has ever had on the site, whilst everyone was jamming to Ian Pooley, August Duke, Lucky Talisman and Ankaph - before I closed my set with a bunch of classics, including DJ Gregory's iconic remix of Venus, Moonlight by Japanese artist Doremimate, and finally, one of the scene's biggest anthems - Cassius '99.

Set Six: Hackosef

Now, by this point, the birthday bash's DJ sets had all been made up of mostly pure, funky French house and disco influenced music - with the odd genre switch-up and every now and again (ahem, Future and Double Dutch's sets!) - so when French artist and musician Hackosef's time arrived to grace the turntables, she delivered something entirely new, fresh and awesome, swapping out the filtered, funky goodness that she usually makes (hence why she's been praised heavily on this blog!) for a forty five minute mix consisting solidly of deep, dark and relentless, thumping, deeply textural techno that wouldn't sound out of place being spun by former Radio 1 resident Mistress De Funk or American legend and techno pioneer Jeff Mills - especially as it leaves little room to breathe throughout - treat the one filter house track (Luv4Loop's rework of a Le Phunk track!) as your reference point to calm down before launching back into the darkness to dance heavily to more stomping jams.

I'm going to admit that techno really isn't my strong point, so a lot of the names on this mix I actually don't know all that well - however, I can completely assure you readers that every single track was absolutely brilliant - with the opening ten minutes, featuring tracks produced by Linkkan Ray, Klint, Bailey Ibbs, Alarico and Concrete Tbilisi becoming some of my favourite in the entire, ten hour event - not to mention that the rest of the mix is just absolutely nuts, and an extremely refreshing ride into a genre that's a little more deep, futuristic and strange compared to the usual stuff Creux La Nuit is associated with. Furthermore, there's even a tiny bit of jersey club and trance in there too, so if those scenes float your boat, you may be intrigued at what lays inside here - be careful, the contents may be hot!

File next to the likes of Henrik B, Nathan Coles and of course, Jeff Mills. If you enjoyed his set at Wired in '03 - go and give this a play. You won't be disappointed!

Hackosef @ CLN's 3rd Birthday Bash

Set Seven: Phobos

If you've been keeping up in the scene lately, then you know damn well that Phobos - the guy from Washington State who's real name is Grayson, for the uninitiated - has been making some of the hottest house music around right now, and after releasing his latest EP through CLN in late July, he made his much anticipated return to the decks at the birthday bash to deliver a thirty-five minute set packed to the brim with synth-pop, rap, disco, electro house, big beat, techno and French touch - and while that does sound like an almost ridiculous concoction of genres to throw into a DJ set, the result is unashamedly brilliant, idiosyncratic, raucous and it goes across almost four decades of music in a fashion that's exciting, insanely cool and super bad-ass.

Opening with the legendary post-disco, synth led classic The Beach by New Order - this manages to set the tone expertly for what the listener's gonna be treated to upon first listen, and following on from that, the likes of Kiko, Felix Da Housecat and legendary duo The Propellerheads are dropped back to back. Some may see this as a disregard for a 'traditional' set - but if anything, in my eyes, these constant switch ups in mood and genre just make the experience far more intriguing and rewarding - almost like a giant roller coaster ride that just keeps twisting and turning (just with a killer soundtrack to boot!) - shortly after that, the mix takes a steep turn into much darker, colder territory, with electro house bangers from the late 2000s (provided by Boys Noize and SebastiAn, may I add!) being starkly mashed up with Daft Punk's early techno work and in a pretty mad twist - Numbers by Kraftwerk being played amongst banging filter house classics from Thomas Bangalter - in particular, the legendary Ventura from 1995 - before Grayson bows out with a sweet Blackstreet and Grandmaster Flash mashup courtesy of Belgian maestros Soulwax.

Now, I'm just gonna take a quick breather and say that yeah - all of those combos sound frankly wild, especially when squeezed into a set together, but let me tell you, at several points during the premiere of this set, I was damn surprised, and if anything - this just proves that Phobos is one of the coolest people in the game right now. If you're in California and looking for a DJ... need I say more?

Set Eight: Gliczide

Now, after the last two sets from Hackosef and Phobos that were a lot more experimental and quirky - it was time for Russia's finest house music talent right now - Frol Fedyukin, as he's known in real life, but you'll all know him better as Gliczide to grace the virtual turntables, and his offering for the night was a forty five minute session that was packed to the brim with almost twenty tracks of the filtery, funky French goodness that initially started the event off, featuring a huge range of his stylistic influences, iconic acts that defined the first major Parisian house explosion and a slew of his own singles, many of which were tested for the night in a performance that earned praise from the likes of Brighton based musician and label owner LyraClemz - and for damn good reason!

If you remember earlier, I mentioned that on the stream, there was 'radio compression' applied to give the event the feel of an actual radio station, rather than just an Ableton project - and it particularly lends itself extremely well to this set, which pretty much entirely features the warmest, most rich club jams of the entire night - so if I had to compare this set, it almost feels like a sequel to Daft Punk's classic Essential Mix for Radio 1 in 1997, just with even more disco - or Bob Sinclar's own entry into the legendary show, which was broadcast the year after. Tracks from Sebastian Leger, Deaf N' Dumb Crew, Mere Notilde, The Director, Ian Pooley and Mr. Hoosteen appear across this mix, amongst loads of other awesome artists - so if you want to keep the filtery goodness going for your weekends and to warm up those upcoming cold winter nights, this is a perfect mix for you to blast anytime, anywhere.

Set Nine: Le Sorv

It's always lovely to hear from the blog's resident Brazilian producer and DJ Le Sorv - who readers will likely know from his two albums, both of which have released on Creux La Nuit, his duo with mayo1109, the great Funkaholic, and his excellent DJ skills, which saw him grace the decks for CLN's second birthday a year ago - and readers, I'm incredibly happy to report that his performance for last weekend's celebration was an utter, utter goldmine full of absolute classics spanning French house, nu disco, pop, future funk and plunderphonics, amongst loads of other great things - and if you ask me, he's only improved further from the last time he performed live - so there's not really an excuse not to go and check this incredible set out!

With an opening string of tracks that spans the legendary Australian duo The Avalanches, future funk veteran QB9, The Director and Phippsy - if you're a fan of this music, like I am, then you know just from the first ten minutes that you're in for a frankly gorgeous ride that only gets better and better throughout (I would say that it ages like fine wine as it progresses, but this performance isn't actually old, so that wouldn't really make much sense!) - following on from this, the likes of Fred Falke, Alec Carlsson (god, whatever happened to him?) and Astronaut Cult take center stage, and if it couldn't get any better, towards the end of the set, Sorv turns it into a blog-era blowout, with Kartell, Inventus and Tightshirt being dropped in order to end out his time at the birthday bash with a whole lot of style!

In short - if you thought that his second anniversary set was good - then you may want to think again, and give this a few plays. Or one hundred!

Le Sorv @ CLN's 3rd Birthday Bash   

Set Ten: Laberge

Despite the fact that by this point, the birthday bash had begun to draw to a close - the party was nowhere near slowing down by any means, and after Le Sorv's brilliant fifty minute session, next up was Canada's resident nu disco and filter house king Laberge - who, for any of the newcomers that are reading this, made a huge name for himself in the late 2000s and early 2010s as one of the premier talents making disco-infused bangers with a particularly smooth edge - something which he's still doing almost two decades after beginning his musical career. Having opened for the likes of Fred Falke and Lifelike - it's a guarantee that you're in for a whole bunch of sweet stuff whenever he's on stage, and his performance was no exception to this rule whatsoever!

For this particular set, he decided to play a whole bunch of stuff from a huge range of artists, largely from the late 90s and during the late 2000s era of French house - but rather than the thumping, club jams that Gliczide, Opierm and Future had in their digital DJ crates - the half an hour he turned in is a little more deep, elegant and extremely stylish, mirroring many of his own productions over the last five to ten years. In his record box were tons of recognizable classics from the likes of Bob Sinclar (who, I just want to say, made much better music when he began his career!) and Alan Braxe - tons of underground anthems from the likes of Meroz, Nightriders and My Name - alongside some of the label's own material and some of his own cuts for good measure!

Go and bump this one pretty damn loud if possible - and if this is your first time hearing about the guy, then I urge you to go away after reading to blast some of his incredible music or spin one or two of his mix tapes - his work for legendary independent label Solid Bump and his debut album That's The Stuff I Like are the best ways to enter his catalogue of greatness.

Laberge @ CLN's 3rd Birthday Bash

Set Eleven: Inky

For the final set of the stream - it was time for Norwich-based producer, DJ and developer Inky to give the people what they needed - which came in the form of half-an hour of club ready electro house, French touch, hyperactive dubstep, future funk and even a little bit of grime and bassline, if that's your thing, in order to close the birthday bash in an utterly spectacular - and extremely energetic fashion. Like I said when writing about Future's set - the opening slot is always difficult, but so is the closing one in the sense that, this is what the ten hours had built up to, and I'm extremely happy to say that this performance was ridiculously epic all the way through, and an extremely unique one at that, too.

If I told you, readers that the likes of Moe Shop, Dizzee Rascal, Skrillex, Tsundere Alley and T2 somewhat worked together against a colourful backdrop of aggressive, punchy jams and genre-hopping beats - you'd probably think I was a little bit mad, and I totally understand why, because quite frankly, Inky's performance is extremely strange in that way - everything's just quickly thrown together in what feels like a quick attempt in seeing what sticks - and all of it does. There's not a single track that misses, and similar to Hackosef's set (albeit, a lot less dark!) there's little room to breathe largely due to the fact that the tracks come thick and fast.

Opening with ISOKNOCK, Android52 and Tanger amongst others - the tone for the final push of the night is set with practiced ease, and compared to the relaxed, groovy vibes captured by Laberge just minutes earlier - things at the CLN headquarters suddenly got a lot more bass-heavy and excitable within minutes of Rico stepping up to provide his talents (which will be gracing Southampton soon with LyraClemz!) - after that, Bassline Junkie got played (to my absolute shock and surprise!) and the man closed with a host of absolute heaters from Toriena, Underscores, Lizdek and Ninjajirachi - it's a massive thumbs up from me!

Inky @ CLN's 3rd Birthday Bash

Set Twelve / Encore: fortyfeds

After some final tracks on the radio, the birthday bash stream came to a close - but we couldn't just end the night on a quiet note, so all of the punters piled into Creux La Nuit's Discord server, where after some chatting and general chilling, all of us (which was a good twenty!) cranked up the volume one last time to give it up for Belgian musician and producer fortyfeds - who readers may know for his many releases on the label and his excellent offerings to the numbered compilations that CLN do - and boy, did he deliver an absolutely killer encore that was packed full of unbelievable gems - extending the night even further into greatness, whilst simultaneously proving to an eager, happy audience that he's an amazing selector.

In order to give the night the perfect sendoff - the guy employed some of the finest artists in the game right now, spinning the likes of Canadian EDM legend deadmau5, Tame Impala, Fred Again, Skrillex, Daft Punk and MPH amongst several others in a performance that served as a mostly euphoric melting pot of banging beats and the odd moment of seriousness - as you can imagine, when he dropped a dope recreation of the Aerodynamic / Victory Lap Five mashup first heard in Bangalter and Fred's now legendary performance at Alexandra Palace, everyone went mad - and if I had to describe the twenty eight minutes he was tearing it up - I'd consider it to be almost like a successor to Madeon's legendary mashup classic Pop Culture, thanks to the heavy list of recognizable artists, incredible pacing and the many moments that were happy, yet oddly reflective throughout.

If you ask me, this is how you do an encore, ladies and gentlemen. Go and give this many, many plays!

And with that, Creux La Nuit's third birthday party drew to a glowing, near euphoric close.

Last Sunday was an absolutely incredible time, and in this little conclusion I would like to thank a whole bunch of people - first of all, Opierm, Luv4Loop and Inky, respectively for creating and managing such an utterly incredible label that feels like a family to so, so many people - all of the label's artists that were part of the event and absolutely crushed it, whether it was live on the virtual turntables, helping out behind the scenes, or even just in chat to say hello for a few minutes - the French house community in general for all of the support, and most importantly, all of the fans. It was such an incredible time, and here's to three more incredible years, you lot!
