Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque!
As per usual - it's now that time again for me to drop a small selection of fire tracks into your daily listening, and boy do I have some great stuff for y'all today - including two French-flavored club weapons coming from Scotland and New York and some sweet future funk from the blog's resident Baltimorean FIBRE - I hope you enjoy reading!
Go Go Bizkitt! - Reach Up!
By the time the early 2010s had rolled around, things were going exceptionally well for Scottish producer and DJ Tom Nelson - who's also known as the guy with the brown paper bag on his head, or Go Go Bizkitt! when he's aiding the universe with his club-ready take on filter disco - having released a slew of remixes, original self-released material and outings for labels such as Deepfunk and Shiny Disco Club. The opening track from his debut EP for American label Stardust has been one of my personal favourites for months, but I've decided to put it on today's post for a few important reasons - for one, it's probably one of the guy's best songs to date, showcasing his (very unique!) production style expertly, whilst also proving that funk's been running through his blood for years - it's incredibly confident and glamorous in the best way possible, and above all, it's an anthemic slice of blog-era French house that, if you played in a club today, would have people losing their minds, regardless of crowd or genre limitations. For the DJs: bag this as quickly as you can, I promise you!
Solidisco - I Need It
Taking our ears three thousand miles away from Scotland and into the hustle and bustle of New York, last night I was casually browsing for music before going to sleep and discovered one of the earliest releases from legendary underground duo Solidisco and I was very quickly floored. Some of you readers may recognize the boys from their work for Velcro City, GrooveTraxx or Fool's Gold (for me, it was through a remix done by The Phantom's Revenge...) - but if you haven't heard of them, this may be a great place to start. I Need It is, to put it simply, an infectious slice of disco-infused house that somewhat reminds me of Galantis' smash hit Peanut Butter Jelly that came out a few years later, and the work of Italian maestro Junior Jack, rolled into a simple, yet dangerously effective party slammer that's insanely groovy, somewhat epic and above all - a truck load of fun. I can imagine Duck Sauce dropping this at major festivals, or many underground DJs dropping this in sweat-soaked basements, so if anything, that just shows the versatility of this underrated classic - whilst giving you readers even more reasons to give it a spin.
FIBRE - My Heart
Whenever the word 'future funk' is mentioned anywhere in conversation during my day to day life, the first person I always think of is producer, DJ, instrumentalist and singer-songwriter FIBRE (who, over the last few years has become one of my idols musically!) who initially got their break through the peak of the movement in the mid 2010s. To end out this post, I wanted to shine a light on one of their most underrated, yet frankly amazing tracks that was initially released for Brighton-based label Savona almost a decade ago (wow, time sure does fly fast!) - I've been listening to My Heart for at least three or so years now, and for damn good reason - it feels like an incredible (and very well-executed!) crossover between the snappy house stuff on Ed Banger during the blog-era and the shimmering sounds and vibes featured on Daft Punk's sophomore album Discovery, whilst being an impossibly colourful outing that, despite only lasting around two minutes - packs a massive punch. It's addicting as hell, it's injected to the brim with dopamine, and in my eyes, it displays Alex's incredible talents super well (although, I commend you also check out their newer work too - as it is even better!)
There you have it, everyone!
I hope you've enjoyed reading about and listening to these tracks - I'll be back with even more stuff to make your Saturday a little brighter soon. As always, be sure to support all of the artists featured today, and keep enjoying your stay at the discotheque.
