Late August drops!

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. Over the last week and a half, there's been some amazing new releases in French house, future funk and bloghouse from a multitude of amazing artists. Summer may be ending, but I have nothing but hope for these scenes going into autumn! Without further ado, let's get started! Skylar Spence - Practice / Affairs (Demo) On August 27th, we were treated to two (technically) new singles from Brooklyn based producer, instrumentalist and icon Skylar Spence - also known as SAINT PEPSI in the future funk and vaporwave world. In celebration of his debut dance pop / disco album turning ten this year, Carpark are issuing a deluxe anniversary edition digitally and on vinyl - Practice and the demo for Affairs are two tracks featured on the bonus LP. The demo for Affairs, to me, is just as good as the album version - it's fun, written extremely well, and is a welcome addition to the Prom King lore. That being said, to me - Practice is the sta...

Interview: Mr. Hoosteen

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. Today, we have an absolutely legendary person joining the virtual hot seat here on ATD - New York based DJ, producer and visual artist Mr Hoosteen - known for his incredible nu disco and French house inspired music, his record label OMEAC and his dazzling visuals and branding. It's an honor to have him on the blog, and I thank him for agreeing to be interviewed. Without further ado - I'll hand it over to him. For those that don’t know you, who are you, and what music do you make? Hello readers! My name is Mr. Hoosteen, I’m a NYC based producer and artist and I’ve been making French adjacent house music for several years now. I’ve dabbled in different styles of house and dance, being especially partial to disco house and overall disco from the 70s so I try to channel it as much as I can in my work. I also dabble in graphic design and visual art too and have made much of my own artwork and animations for my music and my label OMEA...

Review: The Director's B-Movie

Released through independent record label Kookoo in October 2023, French producer The Director's second EP - fittingly titled B-Movie, is an incredible, yet quirky release. Stuffed to the brim with expertly produced tracks which double down as club weapons and chilled out grooves - this EP has an endless amount of replay ability, while also mixing in the extremely unique theme of cinema - making it an essential listen for any new fan of French house music. Across the five tracks on B-Movie, The Director showcases his extremely unique style of production, which feels akin to a lot of the records that came out of the French touch boom of the 90s - albeit with different styles, moods and ideas. The EP's opener, Phunkymusik, is an extremely energetic club weapon with a serious amount of groove - making it perfect for dropping into DJ sets, or even for use in films - that pun was ever so slightly intended! This pattern continues with the EP's second track - the fantastic Let M...

Crydamoure is back (technically)

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. For today's post, I thought I'd write about something a little bit different. Over the last nine months or so, a small group of independent producers have been making waves in the French house scene for a simple reason - they're bringing back the sound of legendary French label Crydamoure with style. If you've been living under a rock for the past few decades - or are relatively new to the French house scene - Crydamoure was the record label ran by Guy-Man (one half of legendary duo Daft Punk) and Rico Chedeville between 1997 and 2003. In it's years of operation, it quickly became one of the most respected labels of its time - releasing several EPs and singles which became classics - from fantastic artists such as DJ Sneak, Paul Johnson, Play Paul, Sedat and Archigram, alongside Rico and Guy-Man themselves, under the alias "Le Knight Club" All of the records released through Crydamoure are of the highest orde...

Mid August drops!

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. Today, I thought I'd do a post talking about some of the great new releases over the last week in French house, future funk and disco - there's been some super interesting and fun new cuts - so without further ado, let's get started! THAT'S MATT! - RED STATE ROMEO (THAT'S MATT ANTHEM) On August 15th, everyone's favourite disco cowboy That's Matt dropped an absolutely killer future funk single, which feels heavily inspired by Cape Coral and SebastiAn. A heavy, groovy single with some absolutely fantastic production, this track is fun, lawless in nature and super exciting, and it's packed with some great beats and dope vibes. A must buy for those into modern future funk. You can find it on all good streaming platforms now! Opierm - Forgotten What I Was Feeling Released today on his SoundCloud, Uruguayan producer Opierm's brand new single is such a beautiful piece of work. Inspired by the late 2000s work o...

Review: Mr Hoosteen's No Time 2 Lose

Released initially through OMEAC Records in 2020 - and later through legendary label Montaime in the summer of 2023 - future disco king Mr Hoosteen's second album is nothing short of breathtaking. It's a seamless, epic journey from start to finish, weaving in smooth grooves, darker cuts built for the night and thumping club weapons to create an extremely memorable and fun listening experience from a criminally underrated artist. No Time 2 Lose is, at heart - a filter house and disco album which is packed with lush instrumentation, absolutely incredible production and some cracking collaborations throughout. Looking in deeper - to me, this album feels like a ride through a futuristic city and it's various locations. It's glitzy, fun, elegant at times and mysterious and intriguing at various points. The album opens with a host of nu disco and filter house jams which are extremely funky, upbeat and groovy - the amazing titular track - which reminds me of the work on vari...

Interview: DJ Double Dutch

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. Today we have another awesome person joining the hot seat here on at the discotheque - up and coming French house and electronica producer DJ Double Dutch (also known as DJ Dion for his fan-made Crydamoure work and also some excellent forays into big beat and rave influenced music!) - he's also a member of legendary French house collective Creux La Nuit, furthering his status as an excellent producer, DJ and writer. Without further ado, I'll let him do the talking! For those who don’t know you, who are you and what music do you make? Hello, my name is Dion Verhoef aka DJ Dion aka DJ Double Dutch - I mostly make dance music in general but i also make other genres (I primarily publish dance music!)  The music I publish under the name DJ Dion is like electronic dance music without any sampling, for DJ Double Dutch I primarily upload french house and other sampled songs and in general i keep that one less serious than DJ Dion. You’...

New drops from the first week of August!

Hey everyone - welcome back at the discotheque. August has arrived, and already in the first week there's been some amazing new releases from a multitude of talented artists - I'm super excited for this month in future funk and French house, because with how things are looking, the rest of the summer is going to be absolutely fantastic. Without further ado, let's get started! Melonade and Mere Notilde - Pink and Blue EP Released on Business Casual on the 1st, this joint EP from two of future funk's finest - Melonade and Mere Notilde, is an absolute treat to listen to. Over six tracks, the two producers meld warm synths, chilled out beats and just the right amount of sentimentality and joy to create an EP perfect for blasting in summer. This release is produced excellently, and a favourite of mine this year - furthermore, this release has lots of different influences and moods - Melonade's three tracks (two of which are done with Kujo!) are slices of funky, nu-disco...
